Mental Health Matters are delighted to have welcomed the Rotherham community to their new out-of-hours mental health crisis service, Rotherham Safe Space.

A community event at the service in Rotherham brought together people from across NHS, emergency services, and community organisations to raise awareness of the Safe Space and the support on offer.

The service, located on Sheffield Road, opened at the end of July offering out-of-hours mental health support when other services are often closed. Available five nights a week, Thursday to Monday, anyone aged 18 and over can now drop-in for help with no need for a referral or appointment.

The charity, who run similar services in Barnsley and Sheffield, supported over 1300 people in crisis in South Yorkshire last year.

Jane Hughes, CEO of Mental Health Matters, said: "We worked with a number of community organisations in Rotherham to create a Safe Space service that is welcoming, and it was fantastic to be able to open our doors and show what we offer.

We hope that people who are struggling or feeling overwhelmed will feel comfortable visiting us for emotional support and mental wellbeing."

The service has been funded by NHS South Yorkshire Rotherham Place.

Dr Jason Page, Medical Director for Rotherham Place at NHS South Yorkshire, said: "It's great to see the service working with our communities and partners to provide drop-in mental health support for those who need it in a crisis. Providing quality, safe and effective support for our most vulnerable people is a key priority for the health services in Rotherham.

"Having a safe space for local people with mental health needs can be crucial in helping people to feel safe and supported at times when they need it most."
