LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to reflect not only on progress, but also on the realities many LGBTQ+ people are facing today.

Across the UK and beyond, LGBTQ+ communities are experiencing increasing hostility. This includes public debates about trans lives, barriers to accessing healthcare, and growing uncertainty around legal protections. These challenges do not exist in isolation. They shape everyday experiences and have a real impact on mental health.

Living in an Unsafe or Uncertain Environment

When rights are questioned or rolled back, it does not create a safe environment for people to live.

For many LGBTQ+ people, this can mean a constant sense of being scrutinised or having their existence debated. This can happen when leaving the house, navigating public spaces, or scrolling through social media. Over time, this pressure can become exhausting and affect how safe, confident, and supported someone feels in their daily life.

That stress does not switch off. It can show up at work, in relationships, in sleep, and in overall wellbeing.

The Impact on Mental Health

Living in a hostile or uncertain environment can significantly affect mental health. Many people experience ongoing anxiety, low mood, fear, and isolation as a result of feeling unsafe or unsupported.

Mental health is not only shaped by what happens internally. It is deeply influenced by the world around us. Rights, protections, and social attitudes play a real role in whether people feel able to live openly and safely.

Change Is Possible When We Work Together

Hostility and rollbacks do not happen in a vacuum. They are shaped by policies, media narratives, and the way each of us chooses to treat one another every day.

Creating safer environments for LGBTQ+ people means taking action, including:

  • Challenging misinformation when we encounter it
  • Listening to and valuing lived experiences
  • Supporting services and organisations doing vital work
  • Choosing empathy over debate

When people are protected, believed, and respected, mental health improves.
